Kronplatz
Name: Kronplatz
Start/Finish: Kronplatz 2000 cable car station, Reischach / Riscone, Italy
GPX: Strava Segment
Distance: 28.41 Miles
Description: This circular route around the Kronplatz offers everything a rider can wish for.
The FKT starts directly in front of the Kronplatz 1 cable car station, with a decent warm-up for a few kilometres on a mixture of smooth gravel and tarmac. Once you’ve found your rhythm, there’s a nasty climb with a gradient that hits up to 17%. After that first challenge, you will ride through some small mountain villages with stunning views into the valley. Here, the terrain alternates quickly between rough tarmac, smooth gravel, mud and grass – occasionally kicking up from time to time. After a second step uphill section you lose around 200 metres of elevation before joining the main ascent to Passo Furcia on tarmac. Be aware of traffic on this section if you’re riding in the high season.
The FKT’s climb isn’t complete at the top of the pass – you will turn left onto the gravel road up to Plan de Corones on a really challenging ski slope. This is the first section that the pros in the Giro d’Italia rode in 2008/2010. Be patient and stay strong because the reward will be worth all the effort. Follow the road around to the left when you see a barrier and private road sign – that’s where the pros cut across the front of the mountain, but you’ll take the scenic, traffic-free backside loop. The final kilometre that takes you to the top of the mountain (2,275 msl) reveals beautiful scenery and views that stretch over 100 kilometres. After hitting the top, you can begin the descent – take care not to scorch your brakes going down the 25% gravel that the Giro d’Italia came up back in the day. After a few kilometres, you’ll join the Gassl flow trail in the bike park for a while, before descending on some nice, smooth tarmac switchbacks. You’re back between the trees for the final stretch back to Bruneck/Brunico, losing the last bit of your hard-earned elevation. Back in the small town where you started, your final challenge remains: 15 altitude metres separate you and your FKT from the Kronplatz cable car station.
Tl;dr: amazing scenery, hard climbs, smooth trails, gravel roads through the woods and some relaxing tarmac sections to catch your breath.
