Notes from the Ride
From Roger Orth's FKT ride:
Bike: Lauf True Grit
Tires: Panaracer GravelKings SK+ 38c
Description:
Second time riding the Katy Trail as prep for Unbound XL. 50% rain forecast almost the whole time so I was going to get wet. Woke up at 1:27am, looked at the radar and had to get out of Clinton before a t-storm hit the town. Had lightning on my left and right at a distance for the first 3 hours.
First rain was light at mile 25, 64 was a downpour and 210 was a medium rain. Trail got soft in places especially the last 8 miles as this is the newest section and the area had gotten the most rain.
The night was a zoo - rabbit, raccoon, possum, skunk, deer, armadillo and a big cat (going to say it was a bobcat) and a person sleeping on one of the bridges. Day was turtles, squirrels and snakes.
Wind forecast changed because I was expecting a SW favorable tail/cross wind the last 110 miles. That didn’t happen, it changed from SE to a East wind. I forgot my HR monitor, so I changed my goal to try an average 200w for the ride. At 120 miles I was at 199, then I just couldn’t maintain after that. Dropped to 192 at 180 miles and I ended at 193 per my Wahoo. Strava seems to make up its own number. Doesn’t matter. Had an 18.2 average but kept dropping. Had maintained 18 until the last 8 miles, trail was so soft and I was able to throw 200-230w but the speed wasn’t there and I couldn’t maintain. Next time
