Description: This route takes on the two highest paved roads in North America, Mount Blue Sky (14,264 ft) and Pikes Peak (14,115 ft). Both of these climbs are legendary climbs on their own, and it is possible to do them both in one ride! I think this could become an iconic high-altitude road climbing challenge. It pushes cyclists to their limit while riding through beautiful scenery. Starting in historic prospecting town Idaho Springs, the route starts with the full ascent of Mount Blue Sky of 27 miles. The route then descends halfway down Mount Blue Sky to Echo Lake, where is turns and climbs the end of Juniper pass and continues to descend from there to the cozy mountain town of Evergreen. It's a quick climb from Evergreen to another mountain town, Conifer, before descending down to Buffalo Creek along some beautiful rivers with only some fly fishermen for company. It's a 7-mile climb up Scraggy Pass and then a descent down to a tiny town called Deckers that has a mini mart. From Deckers, it is a long slog to ride uphill to Woodland Park. As you approach Woodland Park, make sure to hop on the bike path to avoid traffic. There is one final reprieve in the descent down to the Pikes Peak Road from Woodland Park. There is a wide shoulder on the short stretch of highway before you dip into the Chipita Park neighborhood on the way to the Pikes Peak road. Pikes Peak is the most challenging of the two climbs, and it is saved for last. It climbs 18 miles at a much steeper gradient than Mount Blue Sky. Truly an epic finale to the journey.
